A Celebration in Song

Celebrating 200 years of St George’s

This event has passed.

St George’s was built 200 years ago, and what better time to celebrate this incredible building’s heritage than on St George’s Day!

Young singers from St George’s Music Box group join forces with the choir of Horfield CE Primary School and the Gurt Lush Choir, to present a wonderful selection of songs and drama celebrating our local heritage, featuring a specially adapted version of The Hall on the Hill – a community opera by Mark Lawrence and Claire Williamson, commissioned in 2018 to mark the reopening of St George’s after the building of the extension.

The Hall on the Hill celebrates St George’s journey through time, from the choosing of the architect (Smirke’s columns vs Seward’s spires) and the building of the church (‘it’s breaking our backs but will be grand some day’), through revolutions and war, to the ‘star of light’ and a cameo appearance by our own Chief Executive Samir Savant as Reverend Percy Gay, until the doors to the new building are finally flung open and ‘everyone can come!’
