Andy Sheppard tenor and soprano saxophones
Rita Marcotulli piano
Anders Jormin double bass
St George’s favourite Andy Sheppard returns with his brand new all-star trio featuring Rita Marcotulli on piano and Anders Jormin on double bass, two of his most enduring musical partners. The music they will play has emerged from the isolation of the Covid pandemic, which forced Andy to devote his energies and creativity into composition rather than performance, resulting in a commission funded partly by the European Union.
A longtime Bristol resident before his departure for Portugal, Andy Sheppard is quite simply one of the best saxophonists and improvisers on the planet, with a rare melodic gift. Rita Marcotulli, who has played duos with Sheppard at St George’s twice before, is a leading light of Italian and European jazz with a distinguished career as both soloist and sidewoman. Her debut album, The Woman Next Door, inspired by the films of Francois Truffaut, is one of the most accomplished jazz recordings of the late twentieth century. Anders Jormin is Sweden’s leading bassist. Like Sheppard, he records for the ECM label, for whom he has appeared with Charles Lloyd, Bobo Stenson and Tomasz Stanko, as well as his own albums.
