The raucous overture, containing references to the ghostly and mystical subject matter of Weber’s opera, will provide stirring curtain-raising excitement for tonight’s concert!

Weber Overture Der Freischűtz
Walton Viola Concerto
Brahms Symphony No 4 in E minor
BHCO is delighted to welcome back conductor Ewa Strusińska for its winter concert with a warming trio of works that span the breadth of musical romanticism.
She is joined on stage by multiple award-winning Jamaican-American violist Jordan Bak for the concerto by William Walton. Written whilst the composer was in his twenties and with a reputation for the avant-garde, this work nevertheless contains much languorous lyricism and breezy jauntiness.
Lyricism, albeit of a tragic nature, is evident in the outer movements of Brahms’ 4th Symphony, its Finale notably storming to a tragic denouement, although the sepia-tinged yearning of the slow movement and the brilliant colours and vigour of the scherzo provide warming respite. Weber’s opera Der Freischűtz enjoyed huge success following its first performance in 1821.
