Maria Włoszczowska Director and Violin Soloist
Mozart Violin Concerto in D K211
Haydn Symphony No 39 in G Minor – Tempesta di Mare
Beethoven Violin Concerto
Following her sensational performances of the Sibelius and Korngold concertos with BHCO, Maria Włoszczowska makes a hotly anticipated return to St George’s, this time as both director and soloist in a programme traversing the elegance of Mozart to epic Beethoven via a tempestuous Haydn.
Maria is recognised for her versatile musicianship, performing as soloist, director, concertmaster and chamber musician. In June 2021 she was appointed leader of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, with whom she has directed a number of programmes; this season she also undertakes projects as a guest leader of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.
Haydn’s Symphony No 39, the earliest of his comparatively few symphonies in a minor key, has a restless, shifting emotional landscape to its outer movements, which have earned it its stormy soubriquet. Mozart’s second violin concerto, probably written for himself as soloist, has the charm, restraint and elegance typical of the style galant. Beethoven’s concerto, on the other hand is a mould-breaking giant of a piece in comparison with any that had gone before. Its epic-scale symphonic first movement, eloquent slow movement and lyrical finale have made it a firm favourite both audiences and violinists alike.
