Full of drama and a spirit of rebirth following the dark times of the global pandemic, Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra returns to St George’s for their summer concert.
Bernstein Candide Overture
Shostakovich Excerpts from the Gadfly Suite Op 97
Bright Lundeia World Premiere Commissioned Piece
Shostakovich Symphony No 5 in D Minor Op 47
Conductor Tim Harrison | Leader Anneka Sutcliffe
We open with the exuberant overture from Bernstein’s Candide, the soaring beauty of Shostakovich’s Gadfly, and then a newly-commissioned composition by acclaimed local composer and producer Jacob Bright.
Based on reminiscences of Lundy Island off the Devonshire coast, Bright explores afresh the oceanic sound-world found in orchestral textures, creating a beautiful sense of hope through the storm.
Finally, Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony is an epic journey of struggle and triumph. Quoting Pushkin’s poem Rebirth, the composer-hero suffers a psychological crisis giving rise to a burst of energy:
Thus vanish the illusions
from my tormented soul
and in it appear visions
of original and innocent times.
