Tabea Debus
Caoimhe de Paor
Miriam Monaghan
Lydia Gosnell

Composers include J.S. Bach, Tartini, Sweelinck, Hildegard and new commissions based on historical mathematical calculations, all interwoven with poetry. The intrinsic links between music and magic have been recognised throughout time, with Plato, Galileo & Pythagoras all writing on the subject. The programme today includes music reflecting the Renaissance concept of the Three Magics; songs used to spread word of witchcraft; melodies sent through dreams by supernatural beings; new compositions inspired by the ancient concept of Music and the Spheres; and music inspired by humanity’s fascination with the mystical and magical.

Classical Up Close

Classical Up Close is a new strand of concerts offering a glimpse into the breadth and richness of the classical canon in an informal setting. For these first three concerts artists will perform in the round ‘on the flat’ (not on the stage) in the main hall at St George’s, and audiences will be able to sit or stand around them, or move around if they want. Each concert will be 45 minutes long and give a snapshot of a particular element of classical music: baroque, chamber and choral. These bitesize concerts are ideal for newbies to classical and classical lovers alike.
