“What drags me into Kroke’s music so successfully is this spiritual reality they have… it’s honesty and sincerity in their music.” (Nigel Kennedy)
Acclaimed Polish trio Kroke perform their exquisite mix of Polish music, klezmer, contemporary jazz and chamber classical for the first time in St George’s – it’ll be a match made in heaven. Formed in 1992 by three friends – Tomasz Kukrba, Jerzy Bawof and Tomasz Lato – Kroke (Yiddish for Kraków) were initially associated with klezmer music and strong Balkan influences. In more recent times, they have mixed these with jazz, contemporary and ethnic music, through which they weave their own stunning improvisations.
Their totally original style has led to a host of collaborations and one-off projects. Steven Spielberg invited them to Jerusalem to perform at the Survivor’s Reunion ceremony. They’ve recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studios and worked with Nigel Kennedy on the East Meets East album. More recently they’ve collaborated with Tomasz Stańko, Maja Sikorowska, Spanish violinist Diego Galaz, and Mongolian singer Urna Chahar Tugchi, to name a few. Tonight they will perform a ‘best of’ the band’s most popular songs from a stunning 30-year career.
“Kroke, a klezmer band from Poland are gems. ….. they move beyond the rumbustious towards an epic sound that’s sometimes histrionic but also deeply moving. To boot, they are the coolest-looking act in town” – WOMAD ON KROKE
“Kroke live are a hair-raisingly brilliant, unforgettable experience.” – JON LUSK, BBC RADIO 3
