Matthew Barley: Light Stories

Part of Just Announced Soundworlds

This event has passed.

Matthew Barley plays a beautiful programme of solo cello and electronics against a backdrop of stunning visuals, telling the symbolic story of voyage and return, of the artist finding new meaning and life after losing his way.

This is a very special project, performed in the round in the atmospheric space of St George’s, combining old, contemporary and original music with visuals created by Yeast Culture and dancer Mavin Khoo on screen.

When Barley was sixteen he was involved in a horrible incident in which he could have died. The trauma was devastating but music and music-making saved his life. Light Stories is the tale of what happened, told through the powerful interaction of music and image. It includes music by Bach, Anna Meredith, Joby Talbot and Barley. It is a passionate celebration of the healing power of music, a journey from darkness to light that connects deeply with the human heart.
