Maya Youssef

This event has passed.

Maya Youssef, the globally renowned, award-winning ‘queen of the qanun’, returns to St George’s with her trio for another virtuoso performance on the 78-stringed plucked zither.

Youssef has performed across the globe since she was forced to leave her homeland, Syria, in 2012. Tonight she will be performing material from her albums Finding Home and Syrian Dreams. Youssef says: “Finding home is also about losing home. In order to find a new definition of home, I had to go through mourning for a homeland, for a world we’ll never see again. I never got a chance to say goodbye. The loss of that world was heart-wrenching and, in a way, steered me towards a universal concept of home in the most spiritual sense.”

Maya will be joined by Zoe Rahman on piano, and Elizabeth Nott on percussion.

“A chamber music of sorts….Amid the rich Middle Eastern textures are echoes of everything from baroque strings to Philip Glass” The Financial Times
