‘Completely riveting…an hypnotically meditative experience’ (Bristol 24/7)
Two stunning solo piano sets from two very different players, this concert captures the deeply evocative, cascading ambience of the piano as played by Tom Rogerson, and its limpid, melodic beauty as played by Bristol favourite Pete Judge.
Tom Rogerson aka one third of rock-jazz maestros Three Trapped Tigers, released his first solo piano album Retreat To Bliss this year – and it’s a true wonder. Since the release of his last album – 2017’s Finding Shore, a collaboration with Brian Eno –
Rogerson had a child, lost a parent, and was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. This brought him back from Berlin to the Suffolk of his childhood, where he composed profound pieces of minimal songwriting in the church next to his parents’ home.
Pete Judge’s third solo piano project entitled appropriately piano 3 also takes inspiration from the landscape. The album, launched tonight, contains 14 beautiful piano miniatures – intimate and expressive – that take the listener on a journey through places, habitats and memories, balancing stillness with skeins of interlocking patterns. Judge, better-known as trumpeter with the likes of Get The Blessing and Three Cane Whale, will be joined by regular collaborator (and Ivor Novello and British Composer Award-winner) Kathy Hinde, who’ll be providing handcrafted visual projections which combine analogue film with natural materials.
